Dr. Ania Lian (CEO, Australia)
Dr. Ania Lian is the CEO and founder of South-East Asia Education and Training, Pty Ltd.
Currently Ania is a senior scholar at the College of Education, Charles Darwin University and a coordinator of Master of Education Global Learning program as well as a mentor of many PhD students, mainly from South East Asia and China. Ania teaches undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the College of Education. Her areas of expertise include language and literacy pedagogy, educational neuroscience, and educational change planning and management. Ania’s responsibilities range from coordinating Master of Education course, through to the development of the Higher Degree Research supervision culture, building Higher Degree Research students’ capacity, as well as developing international links with South-East Asian countries, especially Cambodia and Indonesia. Ania is a Senior Education Adviser to the Minister of Education, Youth and Sport of Cambodia, Dr. Hang Chuon Naron. Ania’s most recent research project is a “Reading for Emotion” approach that she developed to support students’ language and literacy skills. The model was published in 2017. The model is suitable for all contexts of study: schools, Early Childhood and university. One of Ania’s PhD students tested the model in Indonesia and obtained very promising results. Furthermore, Ania is part of a very significant international quantitative study investigating ways to offer more precise and individualised tools for English language students, Dichotic listening and the neurological theory of aesthetic experience for teaching pronunciation to Tonal language Speaking (Chinese) and non-Tonal Language Speaking (Indonesian) Learners of English. Another of Ania’s current projects is Reflective teaching in NT Early Childhood contexts, conducted with five Early Childhood centres.
Ania also has a strong interest in sustainability and community development and was on the Executive of the Queanbeyan Business Council in years 2005-2006. She also contributed to the National Council on the Ageing, supporting policy development and its implementation. Ania was born in Poland and has lived in Australia for the last 35 years. Dr. Namy Lor (Cambodia)
Dr. Namy Lor vhas completed an MBA, Cambodia, a Master of Education (Research), and a PhD in Education at Charles Darwin University, Australia.
Namy has had a long-standing interest in education, having studied and taught English in Cambodia as a foreign language. Her master by research study was on the subject of girls’ education in Cambodia, Factors impacting on school retention rates of lower secondary school female students in rural Cambodia and ways forward: A case study. On the other hand, in her PhD, From stronger communities to stronger policies: Understanding community engagement in modelling general education curricula in Cambodia, Namy focused on the educators’ community in Cambodia and their communication patterns. Namy designed strategies to investigate those patterns with a view to strengthening links between different education stakeholders to better serve the country and its growing student population. Namy’s recent publication was with the Director General of Higher Education, Cambodia, HE Mr Mak Ngoy, Community Needs, Values, and Engagement in the Planning and Building of an Advanced Higher Education System in Cambodia. Her latest presentation was on CALL research in Cambodian secondary school contexts, presented at The Asia Association of Computer-Assisted Language learning (AsiaCALL), 16th International Conference 2018, Tongren University, China, November 2018. Namy has been also active supporting Cambodian education by enabling universities in Australia and Cambodia in developing mutual relationships, understand their contexts and has also assisted Charles Darwin University in its Australia Awards Fellowship, 2017 Round, Building capacity and integrating international standards into teacher education programs at Royal University of Phnom Penh. Namy has superb intercultural skills that help build long-term relationships between educational communities of Australia and Cambodia.
Professor Andrew Lian (Thailand, Vietnam, Australia)
Professor Andrew Lian is Professor of Foreign Language Studies and Director of the ALERT Team (Advanced Language Education Research Team), Suranaree University of Technology, Thailand; Professor of Postgraduate Studies in English Language Education at Ho Chi Minh City Open University, Vietnam, and Professor Emeritus of Languages and Second Language Education at the University of Canberra, Australia.
Prior to moving to Thailand, Andrew held (full) professorial appointments and department headships in Australia (Bond University, James Cook University, University of Canberra) and the United States (Rice University, Western Illinois University). Andrew is one of the pioneers of Technology-Enhanced Language-Learning in Australia, developer of rhizomatic, technology-supported self-adjusting learning environments and computer-based awareness-raising tools for language learners. He publishes actively, his most recent publications include research on innovative and creative practices in language learning and teaching, on-demand computer-generated lessons, and rhizomatic learning and personal learning environments. He has given keynote addresses in Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Korea, Macau, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam. He is on the advisory or editorial boards of eight international peer-reviewed journals and is the current President of AsiaCALL (the Asia Association of Computer-Assisted Language Learning).
